Rome, Italy - April 2, 2006 -- The Colosseum was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80.  It is considered as Rome's greatest amphitheatre. Deadly gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights were staged there by emperors and wealthy citizens.  It had a capacity of 55,000 people.
