Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. It is 25 percent larger than the state of Rhode Island. It has been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895. In contrast, most glaciers have thinned and retreated during the last century. This atypical behavior is an important example of the calving glacier cycle in which glacier advance and retreat is controlled more by the mechanics of terminus calving than by climate fluctuations. It begins its 76 mile journey to the sea on the slopes of Mount Logan, the tallest mountain in Canada and part of the largest non-polar icefield in the world. At the point where it enters Disenchantment Bay, at the head of Yakutat Bay, Alaska, it is 6 miles wide. Blue ice at the face of a glacier means that it is actively calving.
