George F. Kennan, Diplomat, Political Scientist, and Historian, center, is awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States, by US President George H.W. Bush, right, and first lady Barbara Bush, left, in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC on July 6, 1989.  Kennan was known as an advocate of a policy of containment of the USSR  and lectured and wrote about the history of relations between the Soviet Union and the United States.<br />
