Charles Timothy "Chuck" Hagel became the 24th United States Secretary of Defense on February 27, 2013.  He is the first enlisted combat veteran to lead the Department of Defense.  Secretary Hagel was elected to the United States Senate in 1996 and represented Nebraska until 2009.  As a member of the Senate, he was a senior member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations;  the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and the U.S. Senate Committee on Intelligence.  <br />
